Backyard Growers, FoodCorps, Cape Ann Fresh Catch and the Gloucester school district have teamed up to spread Sea to School across Gloucester. On Tuesday January 20, Plum Cove students sampled Gloucester-caught hake provided by Cape Ann Fresh Catch. This is the first elementary school in Gloucester to join Gloucester High School and O'Maley middle school in serving fresh Gloucester-caught fish in their lunches. Students were asked to vote on whether they liked the fish, and the results were overwhelmingly positive! One enthusiastic fish lover said "It's like fish heaven!" Students even asked where they could vote to add it to the menu. Diane Palmisano, the kitchen manager at Plum Cove, is already planning ways to incorporate the fish into her menu, hopefully with some local sides as well!
Ultimately - and especially with this amazing student response - we hope to serve fresh, nutritious, Gloucester-caught fish at every school in the district!
A few great quotes:
"It's like fish heaven"
"It's awesome. It's fresh. It's great! You can taste the fish!"
"I can't believe my mouth"
"It's the best school lunch I've ever had!"
"Please serve it or I'll be a very sad child."
